The United States Air Forces in Europe Band is one of the oldest musical units
of the American Air Forces. Stationed at Sembach Air Base, Germany, "America's
Musical Ambassadors" have a performance tradition spanning over 60 years,
starting at Greenwood Army Air Field, Mississippi, on February 1st, 1943. The
45-member unit is comprised of several performing ensembles to include the
Concert Band, Check Six jazz ensemble, Touch 'n Go rock band, Ceremonial Band,
Marching Band, Brass Quintet, Woodwind Quintet and protocol combos.
Check Six is the premier jazz
ensemble of the band. Its 13 members perform the best of America's original
music continuing the distinctive musical tradition of Major Glenn Miller and his
Army Air Forces band with many outstanding original arrangements and featured
soloists. The band pleased audiences at the Montreux Jazz Festival, North Sea
Jazz Festival and other well-known jazz venues throughout Europe.
Romans, who built the Ancient Theatre in Plovdiv 1,900 years ago, probably didn't
realize that it would be still in active use in the XXI century. Along many more
or less classic performers the old place saw something a little bit unusual - a
genuine American jazz band representing a little bit unusual institution - the
United States Air Forces in Europe. That was during the Bulgarian-American days
of the Air Force, accompanied by the performance of
Thunderbirds.
